look at my home-made XPS 2 lappie cooler!!!

My Dell XPS Gen 2 is a real hothead.
The CPU isn't too bad, especially since I put in a 1.8GHz Dothan and overclocked it to
2.4GHz, but the GPU is quite a bit more power hungry. No wonder, it's a 6800Ultra.

The XPS Gen is a 17" monster of a laptop and thus there are no ready made lappie coolers
for sale that will fit it. If you want something done right, do it yourself.

So here it is! My very own designed and made lappie cooler Mk.I

It all started with two sheets of perspex and a cat ...

For cooling I used a pile of 60mm fans from old hard drive coolers I had lying about...

To hold it all together I use Ye olde nuts and bolts and stuff and home glued spacers.

The next thing was to measure the hotspots and the ideal fan position...

Translate this into the location on the perspex sheets by measuring all holes...

Then use a big hole saw/drill thingy to drill rather large holes...

When all holes were drilled and smoothed out with sandpaper I mounted the fans and hooked
them up for testing. (get away you silly cat... typical girl, always wants attention)

Finished! here's a nice side view (fuzzy cam ON)... Guess the camera had more eyes for
my wifey at least SHE is sharp.

This is what it alooks like when it was ALMOST finished...
I found that the edges were friggin' sharp and the corners were really reallt pointy too!

Hooking it up to the USB ports I only got 5 volts. The fans will run at 5 volt, but not as
fast as on 12v. That's why I modified an external power supply with a special plug to
connect to the lappy cooler to get me 12 volts afterall.

Unfortunately when I travel it is most of the time to a place where 115 volts is the standard,
so until I find me a cheap 115v -> 220v converter I will have to use my USB power cable...
Still works though.

The fans are set to blow for now, but that may be changed later if I decide that sucking is better
(my wife thinks it does )
oh.. you all wanna know about temp drops I guess... well, I couldn't exactly measure any
real big difference, but the knowledge that my nuts are no longer being baked is at least
some comfort to my wife

List 'o cost:
-----------
Perspex 23 euro's
Spacers'n stuff 5 euro's
Fan's (if I hadn't lying them around) 21 euro's
Power supply (if not from garbage) around 5 euro's
Misc. connectors 5 more euro's

So it wasn't cheap...

And now for the final FINAL shot of my pet project:

Smoothed edges, rounded corners, little rubber feet for spacing with the lappie and little
cloth feet on the bottom for comfort and non scrath stability. All done!
